Origin of the Chinese Valentine's Day (Qixi Festival):
The Chinese Valentine's Day, known as Qixi Festival (七夕节), is celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. The festival has its roots in the ancient Chinese legend of the love story between Zhinü (织女), a weaver girl and the seventh daughter of the Goddess of Heaven, and Niulang (牛郎), an ordinary cowherd in the world.
According to the legend, Zhinü and Niulang fell deeply in love, but their love was forbidden by the Goddess of Heaven, who was Zhinü’s mother. As a punishment, they were separated by the Milky Way, only allowed to meet once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. On this day, it is said that magpies form a bridge across the Milky Way, allowing the lovers to reunite for a brief moment.
This touching story of love and separation has made Qixi a day dedicated to love and romance in China, similar to Valentine's Day in Western cultures. Couples often celebrate by spending time together, exchanging gifts, and praying for a loving relationship.
